GTA Modding Tool OpenIV Development Continues?

OpenIV Mod Tool

It looks like as though the popular modding tool is bad in action. An update was released for the popular GTA mod tool known as OpenIV. The contents of the update were for bug fixes and small improvements. What’s interesting about this update is the fact that they received a take down notice from Take-Two a few weeks earlier. The developers posted on their website that the mod tool would no longer be supported and will be discontinued. Under the Rockstar Forums, they had this to say:

“Rockstar Games believes in reasonable fan creativity, and, in particular, wants creators to showcase their passion for our games. After discussions with Take-Two, Take-Two has agreed that it generally will not take legal action against third-party projects involving Rockstar’s PC games that are single-player, non-commercial, and respect the intellectual property (IP) rights of third parties. This does not apply to (i) multiplayer or online services; (ii) tools, files, libraries, or functions that could be used to impact multiplayer or online services, or (iii) use or importation of other IP (including other Rockstar IP) in the project. This is not a license, and it does not constitute endorsement, approval, or authorization of any third-party project. Take-Two reserves the right to object to any third-party project, or to revise, revoke and/or withdraw this statement at any time in their own discretion. This statement does not constitute a waiver of any rights that Take-Two may have with respect to third-party projects.”

It appears as if Rockstar Games does not have an issue with the single component in games but the multiplayer aspect that could affect other players. What’s important to note is also the use of a third party IP. No more Mario mods, no more Skyrim mods, no more anything wacky from other games. As of this writing, OpenIV’s website does not reflect or mention anything related to the update but is expected to make a statement soon.

OpenIV is a popular mod tool used in games such as Grant Theft Auto IV, Max Payne 3, and Grand Theft Auto V.
